Tarpin Landing Marina
While travelling along the ICW I was able to locate an impeller at Pelican Marine Supplies, but it's located in Hudson which is about a half-hour north of Tarpin Springs. While paying my fuel bill in Clearwater, Mike England, the dockmaster at the Clearwater municipal dock said he would run us up to Pelicans in Hudson to pick it up. Super nice guy, made a huge difference in my day. Also picked up a chart at Sigma Marine Supplies.
We are ready to make the jump to Carrabell, we plan to leave around 10:00 or 11:00 am.

Sarasota - John's Pass Marina
We pulled into John's Pass Marina late in the evening, it doesn't offer much but it is reasonable at $1.00/foot/night. The bathroom and showers are on the rough side but clean. The beach is within walking distance, go under a bridge then walk along a retaining wall a little ways.

Good news from Boca Grande Marina
Woke to a beautiful sunrise here at Boca Grande Marina. I was out taking pictures when I met a lady just enjoying the morning before starting to work. We chatted for a few minutes then I asked when the Dockmaster Office would open. She said she was the Dockmaster and the office opens at 8:00. I explained how we had arrived late and I'd like to pay what I owe and shove off and asked if I could go ahead and settle. She said "sure, or I could just pretend I never saw you." I gave her a big smile and a pat on the back and made a beeline back to the boat. Great start to a beautiful morning.

Headed north on the Gulf ICW
Long day today, 12 hours at the helm. We left River Forrest Yachting Marina at 7:00 this morning and covered close to 80 miles with three locks and one swing bridge. We saw several alligators this morning while on the canal and some porpoises this afternoon in the ICW. We don't have any charts so we didn't really know how far we should shoot for today. We thought we would be dropping anchor but with no generator there's no a/c. We got lucky when we located Boca Grand Yacht Marina, it's very nice and very expensive.... $3.00/foot.
Very tired....good night John Boy

On the Caloosahatchee Canal
We left Indiantown Marina at 7:15 and headed towards the Okeechobee Lake.
Around 8:30, just prior to reaching Port Mayaca Lock, we went under a raised quillotine type railroad bridge... it was very interesting looking. I was at the helm as we pulled into the lock, my first time don't ya know, and I did a fine job if I do say so myself. When we pulled out we were entering the Okeechobee and man did it look big... it was like an ocean, could not see across it. Although it's a fresh water lake the water appears brown, just like the brackish water in the ICW along the coast. It took us a little over 3 hours to reach the canal on the other side. Unable the see any landmarks we were totally dependant on the GPS to keep us on course. Water depth was around 8 to 10 feet the entire way.
We left the lake and traveled in a canal which ran along side the Hebert Hover Dike until we reach the Moore Haven Lock. Leaving that lock we were on the Caloosahatchee Canal, we are currently docked at the River Forest Yachting Center. We had a few showers and heard some severe weather just a short distance away but never was bothered by it.

Okeechobee here we come...
Bill and I pulled out of Harbour Town Marina at 7:00 this morning and headed south on the ICW. This particular section runs through the Indian River which is very wide and shallow in most places. It's also very brackish (brown). Three hours later we turned west into the St Lucie River.
I'm including several pictures with this post because I don't have a lot to tell you... all we did today was drive.
The pictures begin with the refueling dock yesterday morning and last night dockage at Harbour Town Marina in Ft Pierce, then continues on to today's dockage at Indiantown Marina on the waterway to the Okeechobee Lake. We went under a couple of draw bridges and through the St Lucie lock before entering a canal leading to Okeechobee Lake.

My First Day On the Water
Bill Slattum and I pulled away from the dock in Elbow Creek's Eau Gallie Yacht Basin Marina at 10:00. I waved goodbye to my wonderful Dad as he stood on the dock. Spending the last ten days with him has been the highlight of this entire experience. I've always thought he was the best Dad in the world and this time with him has just reinforced that opinion. Thank you for spending this time with me.... you're the best!
Bill and I stopped a few miles down the waterway to fuel-up. I put 100 gallons of diesel fuel in the tanks at $4.33 per gallon. Now I'm not going to total that up for you because it would probably give you a heart attack, but suffice it to say the it was a tidy sum.
We pulled away from the fuelling dock around 12:30 and headed south along the ICW. This is a waterway that is in reality a ditch dredged out of very shallow body's of water. Depths on each side of the nine foot deep, forty foot wide ditch are around three to four feet.
Ok, as I said we headed south at a blistering 7.8 mph until we reached Fort Pierce some six hours later. The whole time we could see huge storms off to our starboard side closing in just a mile or so behind us. We were very lucky that we never were hit by one of them.
We are currently at Harbour Town Marina in Ft Pierce enjoying my nice new a/c unit after a dip in the pool. While relaxing on the front of the boat we watched egrets settling in for the night on a small island and l enjoyed seeing several manatees pass by as we were tied to the dock. That was a special treat because our boat is a Kadey-Krogen Manatee.
I spoke to Daddy a few minutes ago and he made it home safe and sound. All is good and I'll write some more tomorrow.
Good night!

A Big Day Before the Big Day
Daddy decided to stay at the motel today while I hung out with my $75/hr mechanic. The three hour job of replacing the a/c unit turned into a four to five hour job. The unit is very small and it sits in a very small space under the galley counter. The opening to the very small space is even smaller. When I picked the unit up at Mermaid yesterday they described the best technician as someone standing about 3 feet tall with an 8 foot reach consisting of strong skinny arms with several elbows on each.... this would be advantages to reaching places that.... well, need to be reached. My tech, Tim, doesn't fit that description however he did a good job, one of the reasons it took longer than anticipated is because he had not anticipated installing the larger water pump I bought with the a/c unit. I bought the pump because the Mermaid folks stressed the importance of pumping large amounts of water through the coils to insure proper performance. These marine a/c units are not air cooled like a residential system, heat is transferred away from the system by drawing water from outside the boat over the coils and dumped back out again. Remember, you cool a space by removing heat.
Anyway, the old unit did come out of the very small space and the new unit did go in.
Once that job was completed we worked on replacing the three fuel filters. The filters are in series therefore the first one picks up most debris that may be encountered, the others are changed on a less frequent basis. We replaced all three for a good baseline. This took a lot longer than anticipated as well but we finally got the engine started and running smoothly after some initial fuel flow issues.
Next we "polished" the diesel fuel. This is done by using a pump and hoses to pull fuel from the tank, running it through a couple of filters then dumping back into the tank. When diesel sits for a long time algae will begin to grow, as I understand it, algae doesn't burn as well as deisel fuel thereby causing the engine to die. That's something we don't want to happen, especially when there's only one engine. All in all Tim spent about 11 hours with me and I spent about $700 for his time, expertise and training.... I learned quite a bit.
I picked Daddy up and we went to Publics in order to stock the galley shelves. I traversed the isles looking for canned goods such as soup, milk, meat, beans, fruits and so forth, packaged goods such as cereal, popcorn, chips and bread, also a few items that need to be keep cold such as milk, cheese and lunch meat. As I've noted before, I don't trust the refrigerator so we're going to be using a cooler for the cold stuff.
I'll be picking Bill up at 8:00 and we plan to shove off around 9:00... we'll stop a short distance down the way at Melbourne Harbour for fuel. We'll then head further south on the ICW to St Lucie where we'll jump across Floridia using the Okeechobee waterway to reach the Gulf.
Hopefully this will be our last night at the Super 8.

Monday Monday....not so good to me
Daddy and I both sleep till 5:00 without having to get up and pee... not bad for a couple of old men!
We arrived at the mighty yacht early, the morning air was thick with moisture as we entered the salon....I went straight for the a/c and got it to going. I was so happy when I heard the compressor kick on. That joy took a nose dive to agrevation about 5 minutes later when it went silent....crap.
Not knowing anybody that will tell me to sit down and relax while they take care of every little thing, I sat down, took a deep breath and told myself to relax...it'll be alright, eventually.
I got hold of Tim, the guy that fixed the a/c the other day. Told him I didn't want to keep fixing a dying machine. He suggested I call Mermaid over in Fort Myers, same brand currently installed. Looked them up on the internet and found a M-16 work-horse...their words. It's a16,500 btu unit and is designed for boats up to 45 feet....that should work well for my 36 footer. I called and spoke to a guy named Dennis, he said the M-16 sells for $1,860...hmmm, for some reason I was expecting it to cost close to $2,500. Told him I needed it to be delivered in time for a Wednesday morning install...they didn't have one in stock....double crap. He said the best he could do is have one assembled for me and it would be ready Tuesday afternoon. Not wanting to trust UPS I told him I'd be their to pick it up at 4:00. May I point out that Mermaid is located on Florida's west coast in Ft Myers....three and one half hours away. Oh well, at least I have a plan.
Bill called and reminded me to get another VHF radio...it's good to have one at the helm and another in the cabin. I went to Bethal Marine Electronics and bought a middle of the road unit for about $150. We dropped it off at the boat and headed for the Super 8.

Pretty good Sunday
We sleep till 7:00 then had a relaxing time watching "The Open" for about 45 minutes this morning.
When we got to the boat I started on the galley again, finally had cleared the counters enough to clean them...they sure were filthy, walls too. Good news about the ants....only saw 3 or 4.
Finally made my way up to the bedroom....umm... stateroom, again, filthy. Threw away all pillows, blankets and linens. Kim supplied a cover to put the mattress in....totally encloses it so that should keep all the kudies away from my bod. I also vacuumed, scrubbed and wiped down all surface area and walls...I'll get to the floors later.
The right side of the double sink leaks, I need to replace the drain, so while I was working on that and using the left side to clean things as I worked, we ran out of water. Went to the end of the dock and pulled the hose around to the fill hole, found the tool used to remove the cap then removed the cap. Stuck the hose in the hole and let'er rip. We had a small opening in the salon sole (floor) which aloud us to see into the water tank and watch it rise...after about 15 minutes we felt like it was full enough. When I stood up I noticed the boat leaning to starboard a little....umm. Tried the galley facet and still no water, just gurgling. I noticed another water hole on the port side so I filled it for about 15 minutes....the boat leveled out and we had running water again. There must be some way to transfer between tanks....I'll have to research that. We decided to go to lunch and make a supply run to Lowe's for sink parts. Back from lunch I completed replacing the sink drain.
While relaxing for a few minutes after the sink work the a/c compressor stopped running...crap.
Got up and checked the reset button...it had popped out. I turned the breaker off and waited a few minutes prior to resetting, just as the owners wife instructed the last time this happened. After about 15 minutes I turned the breaker back on and the compressor started running again. I guess it was over heating, it had been running since about 8:30.
Daddy and I went topside and just hung out on the deck for a little while enjoying a good breeze with overcast skies.
Headed back to Super 8 again.

Early start on a Saturday
7/19/14
The Super 8 room phone rang for a 5:30 am wake up, took me 5 minutes to explain to Daddy that I didn't request it....it was mistake....go back to bed....please....oh well, we need to beat the heat anyway.
We got here around 7:30 this morning, would have been earlier but we started watching "The Open" and just took our time. When we got here I poured us some cereal and noticed the bowls were crawling with tiny ants...they were in the cereal box. Opened a new box, then after breakfast hung the canvas...took about an hour but at least its out of the way now. I then cleaned the pantry closet and began putting things away....starting to look less cluttered but still have a ways to go.
Bill Slattum called and suggested we go up the coast on A1A looking for yard sales, he thought we might find some needed equipment at a reasonable price. We cruised by 3 or 4 sales and saw no boating equipment. However, while we were out we discovered some stores and restaurants closer to us than we have been using. Ran into Wal-Mart and bought some wood glue and ant killer. I need the wood glue for a slight split soon to be large splinter on the step from the salon to the galley.
About five minutes after putting the ant killer out in tiny drops they were lined up like cattle at the feeding trough.....mmm good.

The A/C Guy is here....woohoo
Daddy and I sleep in till 7:00 this morning then went to Wal-Mart for food...more sliced turkey and bread. We also picked up a cooler and bag of ice...I don't trust the refrigerator. Tim Hunt finally came by and worked on the a/c, he found and replaced a corroded wire. $100 later and the a/c is working, yeah.
Mike's wife came by and confirmed the wire transfer was finally complete...there has been some mis-communication between my broker and the owners concerning a wire transfer for a couple of days. Patty gave me the key that starts the boat, I already had the cabin key, and some more documents. Kim and I are now the undisputed owners.
After Tim left I started cleaning the upper kitchen... um I mean galley cabinets, they were filthy. Got'em looking pretty clean then laid shelf liner after another supply run.
It's hard to move around or find anything because we brought so much stuff with us...it's stuff we need but I can't put anything away till I get the cabinets and closets cleaned.....the upper galley cabinets are good to go now but the drawers still haven't been touched.
I have a set of canvas/isinglass to enclose the aft deck....it's laying on the couch and I have to be careful not to scratch it. I may go ahead and install it just to get it out of the way. I spent a little time experimenting with installing it and discovered it's not a 10 minute job.
With so much stuff cluttering up the place we decided to head back to Super 8 again.

A day with the boat man... Bill Slattum
Daddy and I meet Bill at the boat at 7:00 this morning. He crawled all over this boat investigating all of it's minute components and developing a list of things to do....things I will do, hopefully.
He won't be able to head out till next Thursday but I it'll take me a week to complete the list. Daddy's going to stay until we shove off thank goodness...at least I'll have transportation and some company.

Air Conditioner Trouble
About two hours ago I noticed the ac was not putting out cold air....the temperature is slowly climbing. I think the cause is due to the owners wife mistakenly cycling the dock breaker off then on real fast, she misunderstood something Mike was telling her about the trouble we were having with the lights.
Daddy and I are staying at the Super 8 motel again... $64.00.

Kadey-Krogen closing day
Daddy and I stayed in Super 8 motel last night but we'll be staying on Seal Owl / Overtime tonight. I was worried about the a/c keeping us cool but a huge storm system is covering Florida and most of the US east coast so we should be okay tonight. Hopefully the a/c will handle the heat when the time comes....it's a 12,000 btu unit, so I was told.
Trip to Melbourne with Daddy
Daddy rode with me to Melbourne today, we left my house at 8:00 am and arrived at the boat, Sea Owl, at 6:12 pm. The owner's, Mike Henry, wife let me store my pickup truck load of stuff in the boat then Daddy and I went to the motel, Super 8. We couldn't decide what to eat for supper so we went to Publics and bought sandwich stuff.
On the way down we hit a hard downpour while coming around Jacksonville on I-295...most everyone slowed to around 40 and had flashers on. Other than that the trip was uneventful although I did enjoy daddy's company. This is the most time we've spent together in years. I'll get up early tomorrow and inspect the boat prior to giving Curtis Stokes the go ahead on closing the deal.
